Question of the Day

If you had unlimited resources...money, time, energy, etc and you could in some way significantly help ONE person...play by the rules, you must pick just ONE person...who would it be, what would you do, and why?

That's an easy one for me. It would be Bruce. He sacrificed alot of things and many years to take care of his daughters. His ex is an alcoholic. He's never had a new car. Never bought a home. Never been on exotic vacations. Never thinks of himself first. He is so thoughtful and will give you the shirt off his back. I'd love to be able to do all these things for him.

At the risk of being a selfish bitch, and I am, I'm going to have to go with...myself. I don't know exactly what I'd do, but I do know that I've helped so many people for so long that I've grossly neglected myself. So I guess I would take better care of my health, pamper myself more, laugh a helluva lot more often, and love without fear of rejection or vulnerability. Damn. I was going for 'funny' and somehow slipped into 'deep.'

I can't pick one. At first I thought, my parents, then my kids. Then some of the bloggers I follow with health problems. My best friend could use some help to achieve her dreams, and then I could just go like Mrs Hyde and pick myself. Too hard Dad

This has turned out to be a hard question. My gut instinct was to say that I would spend the money on a science lab dedicated to curing genetic problems like my son suffers from. My only problem with curing all these terrible disabilities is that then we will live in a world full of perfection when we already have a low tolerance for people who are different to the norm.

Deep huh, well you did ask!!!

But seriously, since that is definitely not gonna happen, I would spend the money on discovering calorie free but tasty chocolate and crisps and then I could indulge in my two favourite guilty pleasures without becoming the size of a house!!!

I would help myself. There are people less fortunate than I am. There are lots of people who could use it. But to quote Henrik Ibsen from his play, A Doll's House, "I have dutues just as sacred. Duties to myself." If I am to help others, it has to come out of sincere virtuosity and not because of blameless guilt or obligation. To help is not an onerous chore but a gift. If I help myself first, then I will have the charity and capacity to help others.

I want to say myself. Selfish? Yes. But I'm honest :)

@Bard...I've added Bruce to my list if I ever hit the lottery

@Mrs. Hyde...deep becomes you, as does your honesty...and a nice fat ass as a bonus :-)

@Mynx...all the good questions in life are hard :-)

@lyndylou...damn, this question pulled out some deep thought...I love your Plan B :-)

@Spector...well said

@JM...I am shocked...NOT :-)

@Bubbles...good thought...am I old enough to get one of these free house cleanings? You'd have to ask JM if I smell funny!

@becca...apparently you're not the only one! I did notice that no one said they would pay me an obscene salary to quit work and just blog...oh well, back to the office tomorrow I guess

Dad, I do not know exactly who I would help. The pastor of the church we attend told us once, how someone he knew gave a young lady $10,000. He did not know her personally but he knew of her situation, he knew that she was a single mother and was in jeopardy of losing her home. He saw her out and about one day, gave her an envelope and politely asked that she not open it until she returned to privacy of her own home.

It is an act of kindness such as this that I think I would opt for.

I came back - I liked your style and had to become a follower.

I have many, many people that I would want to help, but since I can only pick one I'd have to pick myself. Not to be selfish with it, but because if I help myself then there is something left of ME to be able to dedicate more time and energy to others who need help.

Anyone who reads my blog knows that things are not great right now in my life. We're in danger of losing our home mostly because of medical problems. If it was just me, I don't mind starting over (even though I'm 54). But, I have a disabled spouse to take care of (lots of health problems, amputee among the problems) and without a roof over HIS head, we have problems. If I had unlimited resources to pay my bills and provide a wheelchair accessible place to live for Ron, then well... then I could just have more of me left over to take care of him. Right now, I'm so stressed over my job (and keeping my job), finances (we have grandchildren who are young enough to not really understand that grandma and grandpa can't afford Christmas presents {although I did manager to get each of them a little bit), his medical problems, and my own medical issues (go figure - I'm not in tip-top physical condition) that not having those things looming over my head would be nice.

Hmmm... probably more than you bargained for. I should edit and reduce it, but I probably won't.

I think I would give all that stuff to.... me. I've been out of work for almost two years and want to keep my house more than just about anything. As I often use my time and energy to help others, I think it would be money, etc. well spent. What would I do and why? With unlimited resources, I would sell my current house and buy another one closer to a major metropolitan area so it would be easier to find work. I would also pay off my bills and maybe buy another car. I would also try to help a friend of mine who is homeless.

Chief aka Dad http://unsoundreasoning.blogspot.com said...

@ib...right!

@Teresa...thanks for becoming a follower...I hope I can entertain you :-) Not more than I bargained for...I wouldn't ask the questions if I didn't sincerely want to hear (read) the answers...what we can learn from other people's perspectives is the best education available. I hope 2011 is a great year for you and yours.

@DW...I hope all goes well and you're able to keep your home...and help your homeless friend.

Pretty easy for me. Would have to be my oldest daughter. A few years ago her husband left her for her best friend causing her to move out of his house and be on her own for the first time in her life. She has struggled needs a break so badly. I would make sure she never had to struggle again.

@Bubbles...what's an oap? I'd love to help out but JM has this rule about me giving money to anyone but her !

@Odie...it's sucks watching your kids struggle...hope things pick up for her

@caterpillar...I don't mind at all :-)

Old Age Pensioner... I guess its special privilages to people here only as they have them on shop windows etc.. for discounts days... She does right as you'd have us all volunteering to take care of you if you were loaded :P. You'll also have a few of us flocking over to marry you... your ok with me though as I think my husband would be quite thunderous about it.
