Old Age and Wisdom, Part 2

Wow, this has been a hellofaweek!!!  Work has been busier than a one-legged man at an ass kicking contest, the weather sucks...snowy and cold...(don't mention how nice the Aussie sunshine is Mynx!)...and I haven't been feeling real great...nothing serious, just kind of BLAH.

On top of everything else, time keeps slipping by and I'm now only 10 days from being 50 years old!!!  Jumble Mash has been bugging me to death all week..."Dad, what do you want for your birthday?"...I told her I wanted to be 25 :-)

In case you missed Old Age and Wisdom, Part 1, this is an attempt to demonstrate (primarily to myself) that I have actually learned a few things in 50 years.  I'm not saying these things add up to wisdom but maybe they do :-)

11.  This one was drummed into my head (most often via my butt) by my mother..."You can think whatever you want but be careful what comes out of your mouth"

12.  Honor is still important.

13.  Smells trigger great memories...every time I smell bread baking, I'm immediately transported back in time to my Grandma's house...mmmmmm good.

14.  Aliens may have decided we're so screwed up that there's no reason to land here!

15.  Integrity is doing what's right, even when no one is looking

16.  The distance to the closest bathroom is directly proportionate to how bad you have to go

17.  If you can't laugh at yourself, you don't have the right to laugh at anyone else

18.  Tomato juice was just a bad idea from the start

19.  Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD

20.  The older I get, the more I realize how little I know

Dad...I like #11 and #19. They actually sort of go together, in my mind anyway.

I like your list, I'll go check part one too. You have a lot of good life lessons stored up. Oh and I have experienced #16 also. Yikes!

@Tory...if it's true that we learn from our mistakes...I should be a friggin' genuis :-)

@Mynx...although a 25 year old sounds nice....I'd probably just want her to cook me a good meal ;-) Alright maybe a little dessert after the meal too!

@becca...I think we've all experienced that little truism

Pick me, pick me!!! I'm not 25 yrs old though... But I can cook a meal and dessert! And we'll have the same birthday so we can celebrate together.

Re #13: Every time I smell marijuana smoke, I'm transported back to my college days when I thought being an adult was hard, but really, I had no freakin' clue.

So it is true, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach :)?

I think you are on to something there regarding the aliens. The damn buggers still managed to abduct my car radio antenna for three days before returning a completely different one to my vehicle. ...As for the tomato juice, couldn't agree more!

Saying what that you wanted to be 25 for you birthday made me choke on my tea!!! ha ha ha too funny! Mind you, in my head I still think I am 21 until I catch sight of myself in the mirror and then reality kicks in.

Tomato juice.....ewww yeah you're so right and as for Aliens, you mean they've not visited you?

Chief Dad it's really not that bad. It is an eye opener but I have to look at the bright side. I'm alive, I'm pretty healthy sans the bad aches and pain. Sex is better now than it's ever been (thanks Bruce) and you should start hitting the online dating scene. It's fun and you can meet some great ladies and the ones that aren't, well just write a blog about them! Cheer up!

I’m 25. In theory anyway. At this point it seems scary to one day get to 50, then be able to look back and honestly say I’ve achieved my share of successes (and failures, because you can’t have one without the other), and have basically lived up to my potential. So at least you don’t have to worry about that anymore!

I’m not very good at this cheering up thing.

Hopefully your starting to feel better as I too have been feeling so rough all week... just the usual cold, aching joints and giant cold sores... I'm getting old!

I love your list and agree with the smell part, certain smells always trigger certain memories in my mind.

Really good my friend and I especially like #13 & #16. The way my wife has to go at times #16 is too familiar to me. I wish I was 50 again, seems so far away now that I am approaching 64. Feel blessed my friend.

These are all excellent. I love smells. There's a particular dish soap - I don't know the name of it - but whenever I smell it I'm transported back to my grandmother's kitchen at age 6. She died when I was 12, so that's a smell I'm happy to have trigger memories. :)

I found your blog through Bouncin' Barb and had to come and visit - a) you're a man and it's rare to get a male perspective in Blogworld b) You're facing 50 - know how that feels c) you have an aeroplane as a background and I love aeroplanes - yeah okay I didn't know about c) Until I got here. d) Bouncin'Barb was passing the Life is Good award onto you so your blog must be great - and guess what it is!
I'm now follower number 51 - darn missed out on being number 50.
If you feel like dropping by and maybe following my blog you would be more than welcome. I have a distinct lack of men there :)
Warm wishes fron a cold UK

@Angel...you're picked!!! It's almost our birthday...are you excited?

@Mrs. Hyde...none of us did...but of course, we would not have believed it at the time!

@Twilight...it's one of two primary routes ;-)

@Empress...lol...I had forgot about your antenna...they probably used a tractor beam to do that so they didn't have to land

@Caterpillar...thanks

@lyndylou...didn't mean to choke you up...I'm pretty sure the aliens haven't been here...I've ask them to beam mu up for years but no luck

@Barb...I don't think it's bad but it does seems to be a milestone of sorts :-) I actually was looking at some profiles on Match.com last week....those women have very high expectations :-)

@Drake...I appreciate the effort...I don't need cheered up...I'm not depressed or scared about turning 50...just being a bit introspective :-)

@Bubbles...hope you feel better soon...I think I'm just tired of the cold and snow

@Odie...glad you enjoyed it :-) I hope I'm still blogging at 64 :-) Or if blogging will even exist when I'm 64 !!!

@Jess...I think smell triggers stronger memories for me than anything else.

@Carol...welcome and thanks for being #51...and for noticing that I'm a man...good for the ego :-) I'll swing by and see what's up with "my" age group!

@Adorkable...not a single pro tomato juice comment...we have found a common cause...the eradication of tomato juice!!!
